I am giving the AVR Studio 5 a test run. I really like what I've seen so far, but: It was able to talk to my JTAGICE-MkII the first time and it was able to update the software on it. I allowed the update because I like living dangerous -and because I have a spare:-). Now, when I start Studio 5, it loads about 5 minutes (!) and comes up with a message box Could not connect to local debug agent, would you like to start a new one (yes), or stop connecting (no) or continue waiting (cancel)?
None of the three options actually give me debug capability. |

This dialog box means that the debugger backend has not been started , it crashed, or is somehow prevented from communicating with the Studio.
Troubleshooting:
1. Confirm the backend exists at ProgramFiles.../Atmel/AVR Studio 5.0/avrdbg/"avrdbg.exe"
2. After launching AVR Studio, confirm the presence of avrdbg.exe in the task manager.
3. Confirm that avrdbg/avrstudio are allowed to communicate through the firewall.
Thanks, Dan |

1) Yes, the avrdbg.exe exists.
2) From the task manager, first time it does launch. (As said, the above error as a result.) The second time, it doesn't even start.
3) As far as I can see inside my machine, this shouldn't be the issue. |

Can you try opening a command prompt, navigating to ProgramFiles...avrdbg and running avrdbg.exe ?
Can you paste here the output from the command prompt ?
Thanks, Dan |

| I rebooted. After that, I got the error in startup. In task manager, there was a avrdbg task and an avrdbg process. To make room for the command prompt experiment, I ended the task; the process stayed. The process refused to die by task manager end process function. I tried the command prompt anyway. No surprise, there was no response, and another immortal agent was born. I guess ordinary people are not suppose to be able to kill agents anyway. :-/ |

Update: I left the task manager running, and after 10 minutes or so, the agents decided to die anyway. (I guess I was able to mortally wound them anyway. )
I started the avrdbg from the command prompt, and for the first 10 minutes or so, nothing happened. Then it finally woke up. Here is the output:

I really have no answer as to why avrdbg takes so long time to start up. Perhaps you have some invalid network directories in your path ?
The frontend will give up connecting to the backend after a minute or so. It will try to connect again at project launch time.
Try :
1. Launch avrdbg from command prompt.
2. Start AVR studio. Go to Tools | Options | Debugger | AVR debugger , and set "AVR debugger port" to 4711.
3. Wait for avrdbg to come up.
4. Restart AVR studio.
the Studio frontend should now connect to the avrdbg instance started from the command line. The Available tools view should now show the Simulator and the connected USB debugging tools.

If the suggestion from Dan does not work you can try to "prestart" the backend:
-start avrdbg.exe with the parameter: /connection-port=4711
- After the printout of "started communication server" has been output: then start AVRStudio 5
This will make sure that you do not start the front end before the backend is ready to serve.
clearly not a fix, but a workaround to get you up and running with debugging |

| The port was 0, I changed it. There are no network destinations in the path. Still, the debugger takes 10 to 15 minutes to start. Per OKB's comment, this definitely makes the front end start before back end is ready, causing problems. The prestart method does work. Thanks OKB! I hope this issue is fixed for the real release. |

The problem here is Norton. I (or Norton) don't have a solution yet, but Atmel is not to blame. My thanks to Ole and Dan from Atmel for helping out finding the issue and my apologies for wasting their time on something, that I should have thought myself. it is not a good excuse at all that this is the first time in years that Norton has caused me any issues and therefore, it didn't cross my mind that it would be the bad guy here.
Once more, thank you and sorry. |

Dear Jkusama
You have exposed something that is a potential problem for several of our users. I consider the time well spent!
Also as a note to other people that has Norton antivirus products: You may have to add the local code cashe to the exception path (typically on win7: C:\Documents and Settings\<USER_NAME>\Local Settings\Application Data\Atmel\codeCache\). Some users reports that even this does not help.
Norton(which now holds the name Symantec) is currently trying to recreate the problems, to add us to the false positive list. I'll report back when I know more |

| A second facepalm moment today: You would think that being on automatic subscription, they would notify you about a new version, just like so many times before? Not so with Norton 360 v.4 to v.5... Doh! |

Disable Norton auto-protect, start AS5.
Unfortunately, this seems to be the only way to get AS5 running on a system with Norton. With latest version (v.5.0) of Norton 360 AS5 does start, but takes a few minutes. With v.4 AS5 does not start at all. With Norton disabled, the start up time is few seconds, as expected. |

Hi dear guys,
Finally I got that AS5.0 doesn't support my programmer and it's already working greatly with AS4.19.
Now my question is that if there is anything wrong with my programmer or with the new versions of AS?
is there any methode to identify my prog to AS5.0?
Thanks |

Hi,
I am running Windows 8 x64 Consumer Preview, and I am getting the same issue, but I think the same issue would occur on Win 7 x64.
I believe the cause of the issue is that my OS is 64 bit. This means the installation folder is not the usual C:\Program Files\Atmel\Atmel Studio 6.0\, it is C:\Program Files (x86)\Atmel\Atmel Studio 6.0\
Fix:
Add C:\Program Files (x86)\Atmel\Atmel Studio 6.0\avrdbg to system PATH (Control panel -> System -> Advanced system settings -> Environment variables: Modify PATH in 'System variables')
I now start AS6, I get the "Could not connect to local debug agent" message, I click on the 'start a new one' button - avrdbg.exe is now running in task manager.
The other option is to install avrdbg.exe as a service, this means you won't have to manually start it. Personally I prefer to have it running only when I am using AS6.
BTW: this fix is not for everyone - it looks like AV software is also the cause of the same error message.
Hope this helps.

There goes my theory on x64 - maybe it's only valid for Win8 x64.
I just installed Win8 Release Preview, so will be installing Atmel Studio 6 again - hopefully without the issues. |

I now have this problem with Atmel Studio 6.0 as well as a customer I am supporting. In my case, it is possible I was cleaning my registry and eliminated the automatic startup of avrdbg.exe. I do not have any antivirus software installed, nor does my customer. I also do not use networked folders. I was using Windows XPsp3. At first, when I got the "Could not connect to local debug agent", I would click the button to start the agent. But, even though avrdbg.exe was listed in task manager, my tools would still not show up. For some reason, a couple of hours later when starting AS6 again for another go, clicking on the button to start the agent worked. The customer also reported that it eventually started working for him. I checked Tools->Options->Debugger->AVR debugger->AVR debugger port and it still showed 0 as the port.
I have tried repairing the installation by running the setup program again. I have also installed patch 2. The registry entry was not recreated. So, I decided to manually add the entry. But first, I tried starting avrdbg.exe from the command line. I was waiting for output (like the above poster), but nothing was output. However, I was able to connect to the debug agent anyway. After hitting ctrl-c to terminate avrdbg.exe, it remained in task manager. Only after closing AS6 did avrdbg.exe terminate. I then started AS6 without first starting avrdbg.exe and it showed up in task manager without the error message, so apparently AS6 was able to start it by itself this time.
I then rebooted the computer and started AS6. The error message reappeared. I started avrdbg.exe from the command line and it worked again. So, I added avrdbg.exe (without the port argument) to the registry to start during boot and during boot an error message appeared in a command prompt window:
Code:
osp.core.BundleLoader Failed to start bundle com_atmel_debugger_core: Cannot load library: C:\Program Files\Atmel\Atmel Studio 6.0\avrdbg\codeCache\com_atmel_debugger_core.dll
I then tried with the port argument and avedbg.exe did not even start (nothing in task manager). I started AS6 and it was able to start avrdbg.exe itself, but it could not connect and the error message again appeared.
I rebooted the computer again, and started AS6 intending on trying more things. I did not do anything differently than the previous time, and it worked. I rebooted yet again, this time failure. The next time, it worked. One more time (expecting a pattern), and it worked again (doh!). So, it seems entirely random whether or not AS6 can connect to the debug agent after a reboot.
Next, I will try completely removing AS6 (and my added registry entry) and re-installing. This is a slow computer, so it will take a little while. |

Thanks dan. I am using Windows 8 32-bit and AS6. I am facing the ""Failed to Connect (could not connect to local debug agent)" message a little while, after the execution of Atmel Studio 6. I tried above steps. This time I did not got any connection problem. But the problem is that I am using ATmega16 in my project and after running the debugger, I cannot see the AVR Simulator in the list of Tools and Simulators. Please help me resolving this issue. This is the only reason I am using AS4 now... |

Hi, I just want to share my experience, maybe I can save time to someone else too .
I was having the "Could not connect to local debug agent" message, and few days ago, my firewall lost the rules, so start asking again. After opening AVR studio 5, the messages to connect to internet started.
On that moment, I tell to block the connection and that's all.
After read the first response from danv, I found that my firewall (netlimiter) was blocking not the communications to outside but between process...
after remove the rule, JTAG start working fine. Thanks DANV |
