One IC on my AVR Dragon is burnt-out, i think its the voltage regulator..
Its happened when the Dragon is connected to a target which is not powered up..
It is labeled BOR 6AW MJ7C and is in the middle of the 3 yellow Capacitors on the board.
I've googled it (BOR 6AW MJ7C), but nothin turn up.
Does anybody know the make of this IC?
Regards,
Jain |

Take a look at http://www.efo.ru/doc/Atmel/pdf/ATAVRDR ... _guide.pdf
The modification can be applied to PCBs A.0601.3.1000.C
Brief translation (in case you don't read Russian ): there is a bug in voltage stabilization circuit design. In case of EMI chip TPS61020DRCRG4 marked with white restangle at the first picture burns out.
Damaged AVRDRAGON can be repaired without any functionality loss. To repair:
a) Remove burned IC TPS61020DRCRG4 from PCB completely.
b) Connect two PCB pads (shown at second picture) by wire.
Hope it helps. |

Hi,
I performed the mods as described to try and resurect my dragon with some sucess.
Firstly the Dragon now powers and connects, but i get the infamous "Failed to enter programming mode" with multiple AVR's. I converted my buspirate to an STK500 to test these same chips and they are fully functional. Any suggestions?? or has my faithful dragon trully been slayed.
FYI ide been using this thing flat out for 2 years and a failing battery in my laptop killed the voltage reg... So im still happy with the product
Im using it directly from my (desktop) comp USB port. Voltage is at 5.01V
sorry to bump such an old thread but this sort of thing can save us students a fair bit of cash |

Hi,
Ive only just gotten the Dragon, The second time ive powered it up (from my laptop), it dies, with none of the LEDs lighting up or showing any signs of life.
I would attempt the fix given on the page http://www.aplomb.nl/TechStuff/Dragon/Dragon.html (which is very informative - thanks) but my board has some small differences (Brought from Digi-Key December 2010).
I am interested to know if the newer(I assume) board was prone to the same problem, and exactly what chip should be removed, and what capacitor the wire should go to?
The board layout is the same as from this page http://olek.tk/en/equipment.php and differs from that given on the avr website.
Thanks, and sorry to bump the thread again, but I havent even had the chance to fire it up properly yet .. |

| By all accounts the new dragons don't have the power supply problem. Did yours ever work on that machine? What does the device manager say about the driver? |

Yea after looking around I found that It is the newer version dragon.
It was only the second time I plugged it in, as far as I can remember there was no problems that stood out.
It died before I even got the chance to run avrstudio, now the computer doesnt even register the device. I had only just put the zif socket on. |

| Can your USB port provide enough power for the Dragon? Laptops seem to be current misers on their ports. May want to try a powered USB hub. |

| I'd bet the board is fundamentally OK. Eliminate the usual suspects, bits of wire, solder splash, sneeze residue, etc. |

Hi all,
So my dragon died a couple of days ago. Never thought it would happen to me but it did.
So I turned to google for help and I got Plons' site. But alas, it would seem that I have a newer version of dragon than the one described there.
Nonetheless, I tried to follow the steps as much as possible since the SMD components look the same, albeit with different placements.
I removed the same IC and put a similar jumper from the USB connector to the yellow capacitor.
Lucky me, I got it up and running today. For anyone else with a new dead dragon, this picture might help. |

Thanks, and great you could fix yours !
I updated the webpage a few minutes ago. |

Hi all,
Just wanted to add some info here, I thank the russian site for identifying the broken IC. What I did is order a replacement at farnell/newark. It costs only 2.5euros. It was a hell of a job to solder it back to the board but I managed. What was also interesting, it seems pin #7 had only a loose/unused pad but the datasheet says when not using the pin ty it to pin6 or GND. So I did.
And the dragon works again, completely! What I think is without the IC the high voltage programming does not work anymore. |

| I know that ATMEL must have a circuit diagram of the Dragon, but has it ever been released? |

The Dragon (Circuit diagram) may be Sleeping inside the ATMEL TOP Secret file.
Atmel not released the Circuit for even AVRISP mkII also.(4nos of burned/faulty AVRISP mkII with me )
Atmel might have contract manufacturing agreement with manufacturer that Atmel Will not release the Circuit diagram or minimum order per year so that Atmel can make little profit from selling the Programmers??. |

Yes, you may well be right. However, at the cost of a Dragon, there would not be much profit in anyone cloning the. The advantage of having a circuit so that they can be repaired when they fail, would be much more beneficial.
Surely they are in the business of making big money with chips, not making chicken * with tools.
Anyway, it should not be too difficult to do a reverse design for maintenance purposes. There aren't that many ways to skin a cat! Apologies to feline lovers! |

| Atmel Should Design the Programmers/Tools Such a way the Input/Output Protection Circuit can be easily replaced by user if the component is through hole or manually solder-able SMD component it will be wonder full. |
