This is an utterly silly question but I can't work out where to source more of the 10-conductor ribbon cables with female headers on each end as included in the STK500 kit. I'd like to use some of these cables to attach peripherals to my Butterfly board (and in other projects) rather than soldering directly but I can't seem to find either the parts (2x female two-row 10-pin header w/ribbon cable crimp-on connection + 10 pin ribbon cable) or the pre-assembled cables.

Any idea what these bits are called and where you buy them? I've searched Mouser, Digikey and Futurlec without luck, but I suspect this has more to do with my ignorance of proper terminology than their not carrying the parts I need...

[edit] I just found this on futurlec: http://www.futurlec.com/Connectors/HDCONND10.shtml -- it's close, but I'm really looking for a connector I can crimp onto a ribbon cable rather than one where I have to solder pins.[/edit]

I bought some from digikey. Call sales and ask them to put one of their technicians on the line. They should find them rapidly for you.

You're close! Two items down in the contents tree on the left at the Futurlec site you'll find "IDC Sockets".

Edit: And on Digikey, select the "Catalog" big red button, then under PRODUCT INDEX we are heading for connectors so its "AC Line Cords, Power Cords — Current Indicators", and there scroll to "IDC Ribbon Cable, Socket" (strange, but if you just enter that in th esearch box you'll get nothing. I really think DigiKeys site is a mess, and d/l the PDF catalogue from time to time. It's easier to find something by browsing that, than searching on the site...)

Thank you JohanEkdahl! I would not have thought to try "IDC" but that's exactly what I'm looking for!

Also go to ere.co.th, click on products then cables. Write back and tell me if you think the prices are a mistake.

Bob, I like Ere's stuff, too. The single pin female-to-female cables are an especially good deal (I bought 12 packs of 10). Overall, I made rather large purchase from them, but shipping was problematic. It took 16 days for me to get the shipment from FedEx along with 6 phone calls and a number of forms to fax back to FexEx. Later, I got a customs bill for $15 from fedex. So, while the prices are good (and well as some of their designs), it's not a perfect place to buy from (at least in my singular experience).

Edit: typo

A large manila envelope stuffed with electronics from Thailand is $9 and probably comes in an airplane, because it would take weeks to get here in a boat, and it always seems to arrive in my mailbox. Maybe fedex is the problem on international shipments?

Perhaps so, Bob. If I order from them again, I'll try the non-Fedex option.
