Freaks,
Following an idea in the "Dear Santa" thread, I thought I'd create this one.
This site has such a diverse user-base that I think it would be fun to have a photo thread.
Post a picture of yourself (may include others, but be sure to indicate which one is you!). Any description or photo content is entirely up to you, although please keep said photos tasteful.
This is me, aged 17, taken earlier this year. I am currently poking around in a basic amplifier circuit, as part of a physics excursion to the EE department of the local university. I am wearing my school's uniform.
The low quality of the shot is die to the fact that it was taken on the world's OLDEST digital camera, care of the university. The thing looked like a pair of binoculars!

Here's a picture of me when playing with my brothers and my sister way back in the early 80's.
Well, these were the old and innocent days, when I didn't knew anything about those horrible AVR versus PIC wars which were about to come.
Now that I'm older, I'm armed and always prepared for everything. If someone dares to say something bad about AVR I'll throw ESD foam plastic at him until he is bleeding!

Here we are!!! My girlfriend and her son!! (AKA PeeWee) at our favorite resturaunt.
I can be working away on the computer or...on AVRFreaks and he will come in, slip in under my arm and climb up on my lap...and my heart rate drops to about 50 bpm as the endorphins coarse through my brain. PeeWee has special healing powers!!! I'm sure you folks feel the same way about your kids or...your girlfriends kids!! |

Thanks, We had a similar planform: The Convair F-106 Delta Dart. Our F-105 was called the Thunderchief!! Our President flew a variant called the F-102 Delta Dagger!!! Most of our 106's are being (or have been) converted to target drones!!
I did buy this months CIRCUIT CELLAR off the newstand but, have not yet read your article on AVR development tools.

This is working out many many times better than I had hoped. Great to see everyone on board!
I must admit I find it interesting if a little jarring to see the faces behind the names. I guess I've associated nothing but the avitars with the usernames for too long!
Smokey, I agree with Gwen. You should cut a deal with the discovery planet (presenting, not being featured ). Also good thing your uncle aimed down, or you'd REALLY have nothing to smile about! You'd have been good at soprano though, so it wouldn't have been all bad...

I confess. It's just nice to have a face associated with the name, and it was a pain looking back and forth through this thread. I was just going to print this gallery for myself, then the devil made me do it.
I think it is very interesting that it's almost exclusively the old coots who use pictures for avatars. Daqq's the obvious notable exception, but even his avatar won't look you in the eye.

Yes! I really don't know what the Chicken is all about. I got it from my sister-in-law for Christmas about two or three years ago. I thought it was quite strange too. But then again, she is quite strange!
And yes, that is a Lynx-Motion "Pick & Place" robot with six degrees of freedom. I got it last year to run some experiments for an idea for work. It is constructed out of Lexan. I am thinking about making one out of Aluminum with a closed-loop servo system that used high quality DC motors and encoders attached to their back end.
I guess only you Gwen, would notice the really strange items in the picture. |

Gee JS, I didn't even catch that! It is a two-meter (144.000 MHz to 148.000 MHz) Mag-mount antenna. I guess it does look like I was born with it, it's such a perfect allignment.

Ok, here we go.
There's the obligatory accompanied one - this is at my parents 50th anniversary. My sisters and I put it on as a surprise - invited all their friends from all over the country, plus Denmark and other spots. Total surprise
Second is in Sydney - I'm on the right next to my best friend a couple of years ago. Lived there from '72 to '82, only been back about every 4 years or so.
Umm, needless to say, this pic is the best of the lot, considering the amount of imbibement ...
I do have a picture of the day the Supra hit 167 at Pocono Intl Raceway (hence the avatar ). If the scanner works, maybe I'll post it. Hrm - got video too, though my buddy who took it was none too stable. Steadicam he's not. |

Ok, this one might be for the Gwen-is-going-to-be-jealous department, but itīs one of the few photos of me that has a reasonable quality (and this one still isnīt too good...).
Iīm the guy to the right, the other one is my business associate. The pile of white and blue junk you can see in the picture is Wandel & Goltermann telecommunications test equipment we had just hauled in from a rental service that was closed down. Itīs mostly pattern generators, bit error rate testers and selective voltmeters. |

This picture was taken in the Adirondack Mountains in New York State late September of this year. That's me on the left with three of my kayaking & hiking friends. The picture was taken at Marcy Damn 2-miles into an 8+ mile hike to Avalanche Lake and back. Note that I'm holding my hat so that it wouldn't blow off. Also note the low cloud cover in the background - that's why I have rain gear wrapped around my waist.

Yes, I believe so. :-)

Yes, it's a rental. The trailer was available at the rental station
as well, the only "customization" is that we fixed the kid's seat
(from a regular bicycle) in the front of the buggy for our youngest
daughter. That way, all five of us could fit. It's been quite a
heavy vehicle, but fortunately, Denmark is rather flat (and for the
really long journeys, we preferred using our own bicycles). |

yep, actually it will do more than that. I've done ~60 but that takes a lot of R's ~ 3800RPM. It has a 413 Chrysler engine in it. The most dangerous part is the original cast flywheel; they've been known to come apart if over spun. It's just an old retired pulling tractor
Here you can see the "zoomy" headders. The snowmobile helmet is to keep the rain/sleet out of my face. The other guy (one with red face was feel'n the pain) We were going about 45 in this shot. |

OK, here's a shot at Pocono International Raceway. What's kind of cool is the way this was taken ... The photog used a 3-ccd digital camera from about 400 meters away. Some massive huge lens with a front element that was as big as both my fists.
Rules on the track were to keep a minimum of 6 car-lengths away from the car in front of you. The focal length and distance foreshortens the shot so it looks like all 3 cars are right on top of each other.
Speeds were around 40/50mph in the inner track twisties (in the shot), about 120 in the front straight (video) and I hit 167 on the back straight

Talk about a blast Got a ride in a Ferrari 512BB, a 1100HP+ Dodge Viper and this tiny open-frame racer. The Ferarri was just amazing - the wail from the engine right behind you was simply staggering. The Viper was like a brick with a rocket motor on it. The scariest was the little open-frame job - you really really feel the speed, even though it was the slowest of the lot. |

Do you get the show "VICTORY BY DESIGN" where you live now? I could watch that show for hours!!! I was born and raised in the midwest but I do a pretty good impression of the English gentleman who hosts the show! My friends laugh pretty hard. Many moons ago I read a book called, "The Design and Tuning of Competition Engines".It was fascinating. |

No, haven't seen that one - I'll look for it though. Recommendation from AVRFreaks are always noteworthy. I agree with you on engines ... In retrospect it seems amazing that such a conglomeration of mechanical contrivances that seem to be so at odds with each other can come together to produce such staggering things as the F1 racing engines or the enormous railcar engines.
My Supra is 12 years old now, with just over 100k miles on it. Still pulls to over 440RWHP on the dyno, and the modifications are minor to get there. 6 years ago that was considered pretty damn good. Today it doesn't even rate a mention or footnote, since the average HP numbers at the get-togethers (Supras TX, Supras LasVegas) are up in the 650RWHP+ range, with 800RWHP being common now instead of holy-crap-Batman!
I remember reading somewhere that the engines in a railcar at full throttle suck in fuel faster than you could pour it out. If you had a 5-gallon bucket, it would be drained out quicker than you could throw it on the ground.
It's like a helicopter, which seems to be such a nonsense piece of equipment. All that incredible motion and energy and noise, levers flipping and bits whanging against each other, all just to ... hang there. |

That's the truth!
My daughter was home from college this weekend for a 4-day break. I didn't have to pick her up - she drove home (4-hour trip). We've had bad weather (heavy snow) just before she came home and just after she returned.
You never stop worrying about your kids. I don't think it ever gets easier.

The armour and parachute are for BASE jumping. The photo was taken just before a bridge jump in Idaho.
It's actually BASE jumping that got me into the whole electronics thing. I was trying to figure out the shortest distance it would take my parachute to open, and picked up SparkFun's WiTilt v3.0 to help. It was close, but not quite what I was looking for, so I picked up a cheap programmer, and started writing my own firmware. Not long after that, I started playing with the hardware, too.

Crazy? Psh. At least I use a parachute that generally stays open once I get it there. Happily, in a little over 300 BASE jumps, I have not yet obtained the coveted injury photo.
How'd you get that fracture?
I'd love to get into paragliding someday. I did a couple of short flights at the local hill, but, alas, the summer is only so long, and I think I'd need to drop one of the other parachuting activities in order to take up paragliding properly.

I have parachuted and started in on my A license but, went back to airplanes...more bang for the buck!!
So, are you D-rated? a jumpmaster? Or did you just buy a chute and leap??

Neil,
Your CT scan image appears to show a fracture of the thorasic spine. (The white oval above the white "T" located in the lower midline of the photo, with a jagged black line through it.)
The base of the "T" is one of the bony bumps you feel when you run your finger down your back.
The two whitish circles, at 3 O'Clock and 9 O'Clock, with a partially blackish center, are your kindneys.
The label on the top right says, "CT Spine Cervical".
Either your Doc's CT scanner needs an upgrade, or
You landed even harder than one might have at first envisioned, with your cervical, (neck), spine relocated to the level of your kidneys!
A little further and you would have had your head...well, never mind.

Neil: I take it you managed a full recovery from your injuries?
John: That's awesome! I find myself drawn to all kinds of flying, and airplanes are somewhere on the list.
I've got my D license, coach and instructor ratings, my rigger's seal (for packing reserves), an expired tandem master rating and demo rating. But I haven't been doing a lot of skydiving in the last few years. Most of my summer weekends have been spent in the mountains, sometimes jumping (cliffs are my favourite fixed object), and sometimes hiking back down (if the winds are no good).
However, I'm finding that I miss the social atmosphere of the dropzone, and plan to spend a bit more time jumping from planes this summer. I'm really looking forward to it. I'm just finishing off the second prototype of an audible GPS-based glide angle indicator, which I hope to use to improve my wingsuit flying.

Doc,
That's one of about three hundred slices from neck to hips, as I'm sure you know! I ended up with T7, T12, and L1, sundry ribs, punctured lung, bruised kidney, bruised liver, and (later) shattered spleen.
Recovered, mostly, bar lower back pain as and when...
Got a reserve chute deploy and repack practice this weekend, as it happens!

Doc,
Did a test of my reserve yesterday on a zip wire... it worked. Unfortunately, after the repack, it didn't... The maker of the harness was there and he couldn't make it work reliably either; he's sending me a new part to sort this out. |

Yes, I flew the B52, both G and H models. Also about 500 hours in the T38.
