In Russian, Ada is called the same, just that, Ada. Russian for Hell is "Ad" and Ada, albeit a pretty normal name, would also be genitive case of Hell.. Just one of language curiosities. So, long story short, there was an officially published book the name of which was read as "The Language of Hell", "Язык Ада" by most (e.g. non-computer-savvy) people. It was a fun reading in public transportation.

Uhu... The swedish word "lada" translates to the english word "barn". There where numerous jokes done in sweden when the brand changed from Skoda to Lada.

Not anywhere close, though, to when an asian car make planned to name one of their models to something that in swedish is a slang word for the female genitals...

Johan,
AFAIK, Skoda is made by Czechs and Lada by Russians…

Uhm.. Skoda and Lada never were the same. Skoda (now merged with VW if i'm not mistaken) is Czech, they make pretty decent cars. And Lada used to be an export-only name, here they were called "Zhiguli", which seemed sounding too much like "gigolo"...

That would be one lousy gigolo, too..

Yes, you're right! Skoda is a member of Volkswagen Group (also Audi, Seat, Porsche).

BTW: the older Lada was quite similar to Fiat, right?

OK, I stand corrected. There must have been some close collaboration at some point though, as the Skodas and Ladas where quite similar. Did Lada at some point buy a Skoda design that the latter didn't want anymore?

Lada bought a Fiat design. For a while you could use lada spares on fiats and vice versa.

One of my friends in Kiev is named Lada and is highly amused to have cars named after her Smile

Neil (we won't even mention the Vulgar Volga or <shudder> the Moskvich Evil or Very Mad)

AFAIK, Volga is the longest river in Europe.
As for Moskvich... hmmm, the name is quite similar to the Russian Federation's capital: Moskva (i.e. Moscow).

Moskvich would be "Moscovian". They were always crippled, but in the days of teh old they weren't considered too bad. Also, for some reason, Moskvitch owners used to care about their autos much more than anyone else, thus making the general appearance of the brand pretty pleasant.

Lada is indeed a relatively common female name. Used to be, even -- I guess it's not as popular as before those awful cars..

For some real Russian car fun, on par with Trabant, check out Zaporozhets:
http://digilander.libero.it/cuoccimix/E ... 8(zaz).htm
There was a running joke about it: "why zaporozhets' eyes are so out of orbits? -- check out where they've stuffed its engine!". Trivia: in the rear. Also, if you remove "-zhets" from its name, you'll end up with a word for "constipation". Coincidence?

BWAHAHAHAHAHA! Stan, that's a new Zaporozhets joke! Very Happy I don't think you can find sound samples of a ZAZ in action, but you'd see that as in every good joke, this one only has a tiny bit of a joke.

Zhets alone doesn't mean jets, unfortunately, but rozhets kind of make sense, like -faced. So that roughly can be read as constipation-faced. Well, if not for the car, zaporozhets is a perfectly normal word meaning someone from Zaporozhje, Ukraine, just like Moskvitch means someone from Moscow. No offense to real Zaporozhje dwellers Smile
