Pololu's latest robot controller, the Orangutan SVP-1284, now features the new ATmega1284PA AVR microcontroller (a significant memory upgrade to 128 KB of flash and 16 KB of RAM) tied to integrated dual motor drivers, a built-in programmer, a demultiplexer for easy control of up to 8 servos, a 16x2 character LCD, a MOSFET-driven piezo buzzer tied to a hardware PWM, and more. Unlike simple AVR carrier boards, the Orangutan SVP-1284 offers a full complement of peripheral hardware to support robotics applications.
The Orangutan SVP-1284 features dual motor drivers capable of delivering 2A continuous per channel, a demultiplexer for easy control of up to eight servos with a single hardware PWM, a removable 16x2 character LCD with backlight, a buzzer for simple sounds and music, three user pushbuttons, two user LEDs, and more. With 21 free I/O lines, including up to 12 analog inputs, and with voltage regulators capable of supplying up to 6A (3A from the 5V bus and 3A from an adjustable bus), there is plenty of room and power for adding sensors, servos, and other peripherals.
The board's main ATmega1284 MCU is supported by an auxiliary processor that serves as a built-in AVR ISP programmer, so no external programmer is required. This auxiliary processor can also read two quadrature encoders without burdening the main MCU, and it provides a USB connection that allows direct communication with a PC.
The Orangutan SVP-1284 is programmable in C and C++ using free, open-source software such as WinAVR and AVRDUDE, and it is supported by the Pololu AVR C/C++ Library, which makes it easy to interface with the on-board hardware. The Orangutan SVP-1284 is available fully assembled (item #1327) for $99.95 and as a partial kit (item #1328) for $89.95. The partial kit version does not include an LCD. Pololu has also dropped the price of the Orangutan SVP-324 to $85.95 for the fully assembled version (item #1325) and $75.95 for the partial kit (item #1326).
