The smallest AVR that comes with a built in UART. Perfect device for protocol conversion and checksum calculation between your application and a PC. 128 bytes SRAM comes in handy for data buffering. If you can squeeze your application into less memory, you can save money by switching to the AT90S1200. This device is also available in a 3V version, AT90S2313-4.
