Wireless Power Transmission – A Next Generation Power Transmission System

In this paper, we present the concept of transmitting power without using wires i.e., transmitting power as microwaves from one place to another is in order to reduce the transmission and distribution losses. This concept is known as Microwave Power transmission (MPT).

 

Suggestions are welcome !!!

Actually i read the document. Methinks it is bollox - it's rather light on fact.

You write:

That's absolutely nonsense. Microwave ovens turn off when you open the door, resulting in zero radiation. Cellular phones transmit less than 2 watts. Power grids would transmit megawatts, resulting in immediate death of anybody getting in the way.

 

Besides: microwaves will have huge losses at distance due to problems with focussing.

Nicola Tesla tried and failed on this one. Inverse-square kills you, even with beamed microwave.

 

<edit> There is also a major regulatory hurdle. All of the frequencies outside of water absorption bands are highly sought for data transmission. Microwave data people will fight to the death to prevent anything like what you propose from happening. If you try other frequencies, the water absorption loss will kill you worse than inverse square.

 

Sorry, but it is simply not a good idea. Too little to gain for a lot of loss. </edit>

Microwave Power Plant

 

 The Microwave Power Plant is an advanced power plant in SimCity 2000 and SimCity 3000. In all it's appearances, the plant takes on the form of a giant receiver dish and operates by receiving microwaves beamed down by orbiting satellites that collect solar energy in space.

 

SimCity 2000

The Microwave Power Plant is the second to last power plant unlocked in SimCity 2000. The plant produces slightly less power than a Nuclear Power Plant but without the risk of a catastrophic meltdown. However there is a risk; albeit rare that the microwave beam will miss the dish and start a small fire near the plant, however this can be easily contained unlike a meltdown. Like all power plants it will explode after 50 years of use.

You will find that the language use in the document is varying greatly. Some excellent English, some less than stellar. Pick any of the perfect English formulations and feed into Google, and you will find, with a high likelihood, that the formulation has been ripped off some web-site without attribution or reference noted.

The amount of research that went into this is staggering. It's a bit like fusion power, forever 20 years into the future.

One of the other hurdles is the simple conversion between power forms. Typical microwave transmitters, these days, are quite on the low side of 50%. Microwave receivers that can handle any power quantity (say, more than a few milliwatts) are all just diode rectifiers. At low power power levels (under a few watts), the diode forward junction voltage eats you. At higher levels, you have the basic incompatibility between thin junctions (for microwave frequencies) and high reverse breakdown voltages.

 

These factors might be surmountable given sufficient time and coin of the realm, but it will be neither easy nor quick.

I believe that there are "wireless" loudspeakers around that get power over the air maybe a metre or 2 away from the sender and of course audio data over normal means (Bluetooth??).

The only Wireless power I have seen is the NFC charging docks for Android cell phones.  And that is very slow charging compared to being plugged into a charger.

"today's science fiction is tomorrow's science fact" - there's been a lot of effort put into power transfer, so I'd expect if big breakthroughs are going to happen, it won't be with the more obvious techniques that have been tried already.

My memory for the exact date is a little foggy but I think it was the late '60s when I was in high school that Popular Science had the article about the exciting and awesome "rectenna".  Large arrays would receive power from microwaves beamed down by satellites.  Even then, I was well steeped in all things amateur radio, particularly vhf, uhf and microwave.  The concept seemed so absurd at the time I wondered how could it even rate being put into print.  40+ years later, we still have no wireless power transmission but lo and behold with great fanfare, the kids at MIT discovered the 'voltage doubler' and added a second diode to the rectenna 8) Can we can now expect power outputs of 'useless *4'?

 

Using a simple example of 3 GHz at a distance of only 10 km, isn't the path loss already 120 db? 8)

I have a couple of those, although I bought direct from China. I'm hoping to modify them slightly to charge my floating hydrometer for homebrewing. Although it might not be efficient, it should enable me to totally seal the unit. I'ts in the round tuit box at the moment...

 

Back on topic, Bill Brown(no relation[well, obviously we share a common ancestor if you go back far enough, but don't we all?]) at Raytheon demostrated a small flying machine, entirely powered by beamed microwave energy. I remember a picture being on the front cover of either Wireless World or Practical Wireless in the early sixties. I don't think it turned out to be very practical.

If you want some interesting reading, then Google Bendini motor. Be prepared to suspend belief. There's also plenty of youtube vids of people building these things. Warning! You'll never get that lost time back. You might also spontaneously utter verbiage such as 'bollox'!
