Howdy all,

Well my very carefully curated Windows 7 virtual machine, was just trashed by an (auto)update the installed .net version 4.7. Just a silent fail to start, after a brief flash of the initial Atmel Studio graphic. As far as I know this instance was running perfectly prior to the upgrade.

Just wondering if any else on Windows 7 has seen this behavior?

Thanks in advance for the kind  consideration of your response.

Best,

R.

Have you been snapshot'ing your VM so that you can return to just prior to the Atmel Studio update?

There's a WPF issue with the .NET updates; IIRC, WPF is essential for Atmel Studio.

Microsoft Patch Alert: Where we stand with September’s Windows and Office patches

It’s been a rocky month, with buggy security patches and patches-of-patches that never should’ve seen light of day. Is this the new normal?

by , Columnist, Computerworld | Sep 26, 2017

https://www.computerworld.com/article/3216425/microsoft-windows/microsoft-patch-alert-where-we-stand-with-septembers-windows-and-office-patches.html

...

(bottom)

.Net

The .NET Security and Quality Rollups make certain custom images turn black. As Microsoft puts it: “After you install the September 12, 2017, .NET Security and Quality Rollups that apply to the .NET Framework 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2, and 4.7, you experience rendering issues in Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) applications that use WPF types in a Windows service.”

There’s a description of the problem on the Visual Studio forum and a workaround in KB 4043601. The workaround suggests that you uninstall the Security and Quality Rollup and install the Security-only patch.

In addition, Microsoft has released a preview of next month’s .Net Framework patches.

Recommendations

Assuming you don’t click “Enable Editing” in Word, there are no immediately pressing September patches. I say it’s wise to wait and see if any of the outstanding bugs get fixed — and wait to see if the patches-of-patches generate new problems of their own.

Remember when patching was easy?

Additional information:

When I tried to reinstall AS7 I received this error message ...

A lucky Google search led me here ...

https://answers.microsoft.com/en...

This is where I got the information about the dot-net 4.7 framework upgrade being the culprit.

Thanks about the reminder on "snapshoting" my vm... lesson learned!

Here's what I've done to attempt to fix the problem:

1. Uninstalled the 4.7 FW

2. Rebooted the VM

3. Installed dot-net 4.52 (never been a problem for me)

4. Ran AS7 off-line installer in repair mode.

6. AS7 does restart, quite a lot of testing to do to see if OK.

All,

After a complete uninstall/reboot/reinstall/reboot now I see this error with even the most trivial program

It's as if a blank version of the MS Visual Studio was installed with no AS7 characteristics ...

Any ideas? Thanks!

Nothing for it, but to go to the backup machine, being careful to unplug the WIFI dongle during boot up. When the machine was stable it did attempt to download the offending update again, but this time I had auto update turned off so no problem.  Then another hour of tedium transferring the necessary source files, and rebuilding everything.

So by my calculation a minimum of 3 hours wasted, and no fix in site for the Windows 7 VM instance.

Swell.

This encourages me to hope for a patch to fix this nonsense. I will try to apply the security only patches, but my instinct is this will require MS to unravel the problem with an update.

Thank you!

All,

As often is the case a new day, leads to a new solution.

1. Re(install)  Dot-net 4.62 (Test with Visual Studio Express 2017) fixes a multitude of sins, long winded be patient.

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/...

2. Another lucky Google search ...

Execute exactly, much easier in Windows 7 as you don't have to fight the permissions.

1) Go to Run

2) Type %appdata%\Atmel\AtmelStudio\7.0 (Delete the folder)

3) Type %localappdata%\Atmel\AtmelStudio\7.0 (Delete the folder)

4) Start Atmel Studio

Takes a while, as AS7 regenerates its particulars ... voila!

Congratulations on the simple solution.

Consider disabling automatic Windows Update?

Why : reduced quality of Windows Updates

Wait until at or immediately before the current Patch Tuesday to apply the previous month's update; an update's knowledge base article will state its known defects.

An exception to that process is during a computing event like Wanna Cry or in the duration prior to such an event.

An excellent way to configuration control.

What's the virtual machine provider you're operating for Atmel Studio 7.0.1417?

Oh ... VirtualBox

Reason : known functional VM

Thanks!

The corrected .NET updates are still pending though the work-around should be effective.

Computerworld

It’s time to install the September patches for Windows and Office

The September patches were problematic — a couple of them got pulled, a couple more replaced — but most of the bugs are now reasonably well known and understood.

by , Columnist, Computerworld | Sep 29, 2017

https://www.computerworld.com/article/3229748/microsoft-windows/its-time-to-install-the-september-patches-for-windows-and-office.html

...

The .NET Security and Quality Rollup makes certain custom images turn black. None of those bugs have fixes, but at least you’ll be prepared before installing the patch — and you'll know where to look for problems.

...

.NET patches

Most of you use .NET — some of you have many different versions installed — and this month there’s a particularly devilish problem with .NET Security and Quality Rollup patches. When you install this month’s .NET patches using Windows Update, if you start seeing black boxes where there should be text or a picture, you should uninstall the Security and Quality Rollup and install the Security-Only update.

Sound complicated? Yeah, it is. For starters, you have to figure out which version(s) of .NET are on your machine. The easiest way I’ve found is to use the Raymondcc .NET Detector. (Thx, @MrBrian!) Once you know which version(s) of .NET are on your machine, you can uninstall the Rollup and install the Quality-only patch by following these instructions on the Microsoft Support site.

...

Windows 7 and 8.1 patches

...

Of course, backing up your machine before applying updates is always a good idea. Even (especially) Windows and Office updates.

...

Windows 10 patches

...

If you get little black boxes in custom forms after installing the latest patches, see my note above about the ongoing bugs in .NET.

...

Time to get patched. Tell your friends, but make sure they understand what’s happening. And for heaven’s sake, as soon as you’re patched, turn off automatic updating! Full instructions are in the referenced guides to patching.

I just changed the MS-DEFCON level on the AskWoody Lounge.

Microsoft releases .NET Framework 4.7.1

As far as the supported versions of Windows are concerned, Microsoft did not make any blunders this time as it released the framework for all supported client and server operating systems.

...

The Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.1 is an in-place update to framework versions 4, 4.5, 4.5.1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2, and 4.7.

I always install the monthly security only update, manually. I get them from here:

http://wu.krelay.de/en/monthly.htm

I like to keep the flow of updates to a minimum. Most of them are just bloat and crap.
