I need to adjust optiboot bootloader for my needs. I downloaded the source code and ready to make the changes. However, I can't find anywhere what is the IDE/Compiler to use in order to do that.
Can someone please elaborate on that?
Just install Arduino. Everything you require is there.
I tried that with out any success.
Can you give more details?

No, this works the other way around:
You tell us what you mean by "with out any success". What did you try? What where the effects? Build errors? Or bootloader became inoperative? Or what..?
Asking us about your problem without actually giving any details about it is the same as asking for solutions for all possible problems that can occur. There are at least three problems with this: No-one is interested in putting in the many hours of work that is needed to write that down (if at all possible). You might not have the patience to wait for the days it will take before that essay occurs. You might not actually read that essay of many pages.
So.. You go first. Tell us the details of your attempt.
As of January 15, 2018, Site fix-up work has begun! Now do your part and report any bugs or deficiencies here.
No guarantees, but if we don't report problems they won't get much of a chance to be fixed! Details/discussions at link given just above.

Optiboot is set up to be built from the command line using make and avr-gcc that have already been installed. No IDE.
It used to be that the arduino ide contained all the needed tools, but that stopped in the 1.5 timeframe.
The github page has a bunch of documentation in the wiki section - try looking there if you hadn't seen it yet.
