I designed a MIDI synthesizer for the Atmega162. It's the controller I use to drive my DRSSTC, which is a cool type of solid state coil.

I am grateful for the PDF found here @ AvrFreaks that describes a bit about designing a MIDI controller.

I hope that the MIDI code that I've left here might be of some use or interest.

I'm interested in making a super-cheap MIDI controller using 16-cent infraRed diodes and detectors. The web site that describes it is here: www.artemlive.com/cgi-bin/news?c=v&id=758

It used to be here in the projects section but I couldn't find it today.

This combination of diodes and an op-amp gives an ADC-readable voltage according to how far the hand is from the LEDs. This voltage can go into an AVR ADC and the digital result be sent to the synth as continous-controller filter-cutoff-frequency, pitch bend messages, effects delay-length, attack rate, or even just volume. All hand-controlled like a Theremin.

So how does that zapper make sound? You emit zaps of various durations like pwm? Any way of controlling the volume? How many volts to get a zap? 30KV?

Yeah I suppose in layman terms it's bursts per second to produce tones. PWM, yes. I'm using a pair of 16 bit timers and both compare units, plus 1 bit timer with 1 compare unit to produce up to 4 note polyphonic.

Only way to reduce volume is to decrease arc length. That's takes all the fun out of it.

I can't quite calculate the voltage. Someone more qualified would have to answer that.

This is known as a Dual Resonant Solid State Tesla Coil. My midi synthesizer merely sends burts of PWM to the enable line on the coil.

I use the 6N138 to interface the MIDI line.

It's been a while since my last post here. I'll post one more link to a video of my system in action. It has some slight improvements since the last release. I'll soon be starting another MIDI controller design, so, this one may become obsolete...

So I want to use it up at the local blues bar with my guitar. Any COTS pitch extractor to midi boxes for guitar around? If I set it up too close to the bass player does his hair stand up on end?
