I got software with mine too but the software does not work. I Emailed Atmel and was told by one of their reps to come to AVR Freaks and D'load there software and that it actually worked better than Atmel's. I D'loaded the software from this site and was unable to install it for the reasons stated above....

Go to AVR Dummies at http://8bit.at/avr/

Go through all of it but especially goto DOWNLOAD and download and install those files

Do what is in FIRST STEPS using the GCCTEST

The AVR ISP 2.65 you mention at the start of the thread is in the STK300_APP_BUILDER

After all of this you will have the following pieces of software.
1. The AVR Studio 3.2?? (This is what I use for my text editor. Edline can do all that this can do but the editor that comes with the Studio is much easier. Available at www.atmel.com)
2. The AVR GCC, the compiler. A DOS program. Use the MAKE command to compile your programs. Look inside the MAKEFILE file, the TARGET is the name of the file you will be compiling. The MAKEFILE and the file you are compiling should be in the same directory. The MAKE1 and MAKE2 need to be copied to the C:\AVRGCC\INCLUDE directory, not the C:|AVRGCC\GCCTEST\INCLUDE directory.
3. The AVR ISP which you use to talk to the STK300 with. It is used to read, erase, program, verify etc. what is on the AVR chip.

This may not get you completely out of the woods but you should be much closer.
