Freaks,

It has come to my attention that the majority of the content from AVRFreaks, including this section of which I am the moderator, is being stolen for repost on another website.

Posting material on this website, assuming you are the original author and rightful owner of that intellectual property, gives your implied consent for that material to be made public for publishing exclusivley on this website. You do not lose your copyright to your IP and as such posting material here does NOT give consent for others to repost your material elsewhere.

Please be advised that all material in this section may only be duplicated elsewhere (excluding the re-posting of said material on this site with full author credit) with the prior explicit consent from the content's author. Failure to secure such consent is considered copyright theft and may be considered illegal and punishable by your local laws.

Thankyou for your attention.

Indeed. I've sent yet another email to the host asking them to shut it down -- still no reply. I just saw he's lifted all the content from here, plus more of the other projects such as Sylvain's bootloader. Just making sure he knows what he's doing is explicitly illegal, and making sure noone else gets the same idea.... ;).

Hi

I am referring to the Copyright message.
Could this be mention on the AVRFREAK (Home) Page for other users to see?
Maybe in the right hand side column as there is a bit of spare space.

Not "most people" - the one's who aren't concerned about it are what we generally call "thieves" (other, less complementary words may also be used) ;-)

Remember that most people on this message board make a living from creating intellectual property, whether it be computer software or documentation, so take a pretty dim view of idiots who suggest that it has no value and are happy to steal it.

On the other hand, if code or documentation is distributed under a license that allows for copying such as GPL (restricted) or BSD (completely free) then no one has any issue about it's duplication as long as the terms of the license are adhered to.

PS You don't know someone called "Dan" by any chance?

nope, never heard about "Dan"...

Thats make sense, but at other hand, how can explain a phrase "science belong to god, and it must be used for the prosperity of mankind".

Isn't that means, that we have obligation to spread the science we have learned for use of other people.

PS: Do u think isn`t to harsh to call poeple like that as thieves??

Who said that and when did it become a law? Sounds like 'morality' a thief would make up to justify his bad behavior.

Ironic since science obliterates the need for God.

There is two thing i want to underline here:

First, who is totally jerk. That kind of people who is really thieves, the kind of take everything. They know what they doing but continue to make that kind of mistake, and even to make it worse is they have a nerd to publish it using their own name.
Second, is simply people that really dont know anything, it is just simply someone that didn't knowed that what they doing is a mistake. For this we must give them a warning and some knowledge.

Mostly, people don't concern is because they didn't realize the important of copyright or license. And for that we must give them some basic knowledge about that kind of thing.
Maybe this thing about copyright or license can be used as one of basic study especially at technology school.
Or maybe admin can hire lawyers, to teach a newbie about that...

It would be nice to inform those whose copyright is being violated who the person doing this is. It is after all, their works not yours.

Should I ever reference material from here (quote, not copy) I will follow my normal procedure--namely specifying from whence the material came (with quotes) and linking to the source as well.

Is this sufficient to ablate foul cries of "copyright infringement" or should more explicit permissions be sought?

I'd consider quotes as "fair use", so you'd probably be fine from the majority here. It's always best to ask first if unsure, however.

Personally, I'm fine with my tutorials being quoted or even distributed, although in the latter case only after being asked first.
