I am attempting to write a simple test program for a new board that is being developed. A project was generated using ATMEL Studio 7.8 for a ATSAM70Q21 device. The source code is attached. It is very simple, just toggling a output but to see if the processor is alive. The board is attached with a Atmel-ICE. The program compiles and seems to load but never gets to a break point even if the break point is at the first executable line.

Doing a "break" in the debugger seems to stop it in some assembly code with no source code.

Any ideas what might be missing or improperly configured?

I ran your code with no changes on my SAME70 Xplained board.  Got into the while loop ok.

There must be a problem with the debug interface. It looks like it is working but there is no detectable action on the board. The next step is to try the Atmil-ICE on the development board. It was not clear that was possible, I had used the built in debugger with the board.

There were two issues. There was an error in the pin out to connect to the Atmil-ICE, that was fairly easy. The messy one was that one is expected to know that with a "blank" chip one must set the fuse register to allow the chip to boot to flash (GPNVM bit 1). As this did not have to be done with the development board. I made the incorrect assumption that by default, the chip would come up in the debugger with the Atmil-ICE.
