Hi all,

I was working on a project with an ATmega328P Xplained mini. I was debugging it while attached to a circuit when Atmel Studio suddenly couldn't find the mEDBG tool. The board still has power but Device Manager doesn't recognize the device and Atmel Studio doesn't seem to realize it's connected.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If it's not in the device manager, then Studio won't find it...

So, is it powered? Is it connected? Is the cable good? (yes, silly questions...)

(yes, I work for Atmel, yes, I do this in my spare time, now stop sending PMs)

Yes to all three. The green (and orange) LED is on when hooked up. The cable is good since I used it for my digital camera and the computer recognized it with no problems.

Not on Windoze ATM, but IIRC theres a node in the device manager called "Unknown devices" or some such. Does it appear there?

Having the Device Manager open, are there any changes in the device tree when you connect and disconnect the XPlained mini?

Yes. It says 'Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)' in the device manager for the board.

Determining if this is a problem with the board or the Windows system might be done by plugging the board into another computer and check if it comes up correctly there.

I tried it briefly on a different computer and it didn't recognize the device.

I've had trouble with the micro-USB connector on other XPlained-Pro boards - if you have a dodgy connection there, it will obviously upset things for USB ...

Good! Problem space divided and result points to board.

Now let's think of good, solid ways to test if there is an electrical circuit problem or if this is about e.g. thrashed firmware. I'm no specialist when it comes to snooping/spying on USB traffic, but that might be a way to get more details out in the open. I believe there are others here that are more experienced in USB snooping so let's se of someone "hops in"  and has tips/advice on this.

Atmel has kind of a history of USB connectors being/getting "dodgy" so take awneils hint and have a close inspection of the USB connector.
