I have searched and tried to find a solution to my problem but I just can't get anything to work. I got a new computer and am trying to get the programmer and software to work. I updated drivers and it shows correctly in Device Manager. I try to program a chip and I get the message that my firmware version is 1.16 and needs to be updated to 1.18. I run the update and I get the error that the update failed and to toggle power and try again. I pressed the upgrade button and then Studio showed that the programmer was disconnected. I tried to update the firmware through FLIP but I get an error that the USB device cannot be opened.

Any ideas?

If you are using Windows 10 take a look at the Olimex website:

https://www.olimex.com/Products/...

There are drivers for it there you might want to try installing forst....if you haven't already

Yes, I installed the drivers from Olimex and verified that it was the correct drivers (version 1/27/16)

I have tried a few more things and here is what I have discovered.

I updated the drivers and it shows correctly??? in Device Manager (it almost matches the picture on Olimex's website). It isn't exact. I can get it to install 2 different ways but neither of them is exactly like the manual says.

In the Olimex instructions, it shows the programmer as an Atmel USB Device and the Driver for the AVR ISP mkII as:

Atmel USB Device->AVR ISP mkII->

Provider: libusb-win 32

Driver Date: 1/27/16

Driver version: 1.2.6.0

Digital Signer: Atmel Norway

When I install the programmer, it will show up as Atmel-> AVR ISP mkII ->

Provider: Atmel Norway AS

Driver Date: 2/2/2017

Driver version: 42.0.1.0

Digital Signer: Atmel Norway

When I run Atmel Studio, it sees the programmer and when I try to program a device, it will say that the firmware is out of date, that the firmware is version 1.16 and it needs to be updated to version 1.18. When I try to update it, I get an error that the update failed to reset the power and try again. But that doesn't work. If I run FLIP, then I get an error that it cannot open the USB device.

So then I updated the drivers to the one from the Olimex web site

It will shows up as a libusb-win32 devices -> AVR ISP mkII -> (Not Atmel USB device, but the driver version and date are correct)

Provider: libusb-win 32

Driver Date: 1/27/16

Driver version: 1.2.6.0

Digital Signer: Atmel Norway

Atmel Studio will recognize the programmer but when I try to program a chip I get this error:

And when I run FLIP I get the same cannot open USB Device error.

How do I get this programmer to work?

I tried that as well. I found a setting in Studio that you can set to ignore firmware updates and it works now.

Care to share the settings location?

Tools menu, Options. Then Tools (in the "tree control") and at the right is a dropdown Check Firmware (True/False).

Yes that is where it is at. I don't know how I am supposed to get firmware updates but at least it works now!
