Can anyone help me in this?

I am getting this error while reading the device signature. I can debug and download my attiny48 but can't perform this operation. What exactly is this happening?

This topic has a solution.

Have you tried lowering the ISP clock frequency?

Can you read the fuses? What are their values?

No, the same error arises while reading the fuses.  Yes, ISP clock frequency is lowered.

I can debug and download my attiny48 ...

Did you 'Disable debugWire and Close' to finish debug session?

No, it didnt ask anything like that. It only asked to enable debugWire once.

Start a debugging session. Then in the Debug menu select Disable debugwire and exit.

Background: Whenever a debug session is started, the fuses are programmed so that debugWire is enabled and ISP is disabled. If you do not exit by doing the above, then debugWire will still be enabled and ISP still disabled. Exiting using the menu alternative above will disable debugWire and enable ISP.

Here's a tip: The search function here a AVRfreaks is FUBAR, but you can search this site using Google [1] by adding "site:avrfreaks.net" at the end of the search term.

Try "stuck in debugwire site:avrfreaks.net" and similar ;-)

Yeah, I know you didn't know you where actually "stuck in debugwire" - just a tip for the future. (-:

Thanks for the tip, Johan.  Didn't know you could do that.  I am so technically behind the curve it scares me.
