After a hefty Studio crash causing a blue screen of death. It does not want to start properly.

I keep getting the message below:

when looking in the log file that is mentioned in the file I see the following errors:

I run studio:

I have already tried the "repair" function in the installation. that does not seem to work.

Has anybody else experienced this same problem and found a way to recover?

This topic has a solution.

As a further problem I just tried to program a new build, and both my atmel Ice and AVR ISP no longer seem to be working.

this is becoming a serious problem :(

I have added the xml and xsl file that are in the directory mentioned.

I had to rename them to txt files as xml and xsl files are not allowed to be attached.

I really hope someone can tell me what is going on, it almost looks like the driver is crashed.

Hi meslomp,

I'm jumping in on this thread since I'm having the same type of crash while trying to program through ISP. I'm trying to transfer my program with a dragon from Atmel Studio 7 and it seems that it'll make my device

crash everytime I try to do so. After resetting the device a couple of times, the program will be able to be sent, but as soon as he receives it it will crash but still contain the program. Then again, it will crash after a few seconds? it only started happening since wednesday for me.

software update problem? I have a collegue here that has the same type of problem?

Cheers,

It doesn't sound like it!

The crash that meslomp is describing is Atmel Studio itself crashing - but you seem to be talking about your target system crashing?

By same type of crash, I mean my ISP programming pops up errors in Studio 7. I can't properly program any device at the moment, it will work intermittently.

But meslomp's problem is that AS7 won't start. Your problem is nothing like this and your post threatens to sidetrack this thread. Suggest you either start a new thread or post onto one that is more relevant (that at least mentions ISP)

Cliff, after showing the pop-up AS7 does start. But I did not have that pop-up before the blue screen, and a repair of AS7 does not resolve the problem. In addition I could no longer connect with both my ISP MK2 and AVR ICE. studio would crash when trying to program the target. I got a message window that either tolled me that AS7 was very busy with an internal task and if I wanted to wait. No mater what I did there AS7 would completely freeze-up or I got a message that there was a problem with something mplab related.

now something fishy is going on.......

Before writing my initial post I had done at least 2 re-starts of my PC, had disconnected and re-connected the ISP and ICE multiple times, and nothing worked. AS7 would keep crashing/ freezing-up.

I had tried at least 2 're-starts' of windows before writing my initial post. I even turned the PC off(without removing the 230V) before I wrote my initial messages.

After that I really turned off the machine, including 230V removal as I had to pick-up my wife, plus that I was so frustrated that I did not think I was going to be on it this evening again. Now I just turned it ON again and I still do get the error message from the original post, but I do seem to be able again to program my device with both the ICE and ISP, so that is a massive relief as I have just started on a serious program for the first time in my coding history.

@nomercy515

Keep in mind that when you program your device you will see at least 2 resets. At least that is what I always see. you have running code, then you get 1 reset were the old code seems to be briefly re-started, then the programming is done, and then a second re-start will be with the new code.

So the original problem is not solved, but fortunately I can keep on working.

This reply has been marked as the solution.

Ok finally seem to have found a solution for this,

After a number of other posts on crashes, there were comments like AS7 not being able to clean up its own garbage when it has crashed before.

So I did a little test.

in the directory:

C:\Users\Marcel\AppData\Local\Atmel\AtmelStudio

there is a sub directory called "7.0"

I decided to rename that directory and see what happened.

Well Atmel studio re-genreates the directory structure up on start. The start-up time was a lot longer for the first try, but the error message did not appear after starting.

Also a second time starting did not give this error message I had.

So for future reference, when renaming/deleting the folder seems to be solving this particular error, and potentially more that pop-up during start-up of AS7
