Hi,

I am just getting into AVR programming and just purchase an AVR Dragon. I am able to program an ATTiny85 with ISP with no issues. When I try to program an ATMega168A (ISP) using Atmel Studio 6.2 and the AVR Dragon, ATmel Studio cannot read the ATMega168a.

I have connected the wires at stated in the docs here -> http://www.atmel.com/webdoc/avrdragon/avrdragon.SCKT3200A2.html.

ISP-ATMega168A

I am getting the following error:

ATMega168a Device Signiture

Is there anything I need to do?

Yes,   just put your mega168 into a Arduino.

Then program it via the 6-pin ISP header.

I suspect that your mega168 requires a crystal.   e.g. from the Arduino pcb.

Of course,   it may be that you have deliberately set the DWEN or RSTDISBL fuse.

Or deliberately set inappropriate clock fuses.

You can recover.    But there are a lot of wires to connect for HVPP.

Thank You. I have an ATMega328P on a breadboard, with caps and an external crystal. I got ATMel Studio to detect the 328p. If I swap out the 328p with the 168A, ATmel Studio does not detect it. I suspect the hookup is slightly different (caps?). I'll have to take a look at the datasheet and see whats going on.

Welcome to AVRFreaks Philly.

In your original post the screen capture shows that you had the ISP frequency as 1MHz. That is too high for a "virgin" M168. Lower it to 125KHz with the slider and you should be "good to go".

Cheers,

Ross
