See the 'double speed' bit in the spi control register? That lets you clock the spi at 8MHz. So that's 1usec per byte. One megabte per second.

You can't use a hardware fifo buffer in an AVR because it doesn't have a hardware fifo. But you can use a receive interrupt on the uart. The interrupt handler...
