Ok,   so it looks like the timer setup needs tweaking.   this code, poorly ported by me from atmega128 to atmega1281, is setting the wrong bits....

Re building it in - for the stuff I do at work, I tend to have many processors, all with at least one serial monitoring point and sometimes serial comms...
