The pot wiper is carbon on plastic. The scratchy crap is tar and nicotime from smoke. You want to loosen that stuff up and not melt the plastic and carbon pot...

Often a decaying average is enough. But if you do not want to have any historical data after a given number of sampls, the simple moving average is better...
