This is what I have used before with other SPI EEPROMS,  from memory it was a Motorola routine ported to the AVR ;Writes and Reads memory locations...

But what function does the 1R/4.7uF combination play in the circuit Its an LC filter with RC snubber leg, the RC leg is used to dampen off the resonant peak...
